In January 2017, Square Enix revealed they were working on a Marvel’s Avengers game. This was referred to as “The Avengers Project” at the time. They said the game was to be developed by Crystal Dynamics Studio and would also include contributions from Eidos Montreal.
Up until recently, Square Enix has remained silent about the project. Only saying that this won’t be the only Marvel game Square Enix will be releasing. It’s part of a “multi-year, multi-game partnership”. It was also made clear that this would be an original story in its own universe unrelated to the MCU.
This week, however, Square Enix announced that the game will be revealed at its E3 2019 press conference, referring to the game as “Marvel’s Avengers” which will presumably be the name the game is released under. The conference will be held in just over a week on June 10 at 6 PM PT.
Accidental Marvel’s Avengers Game: E3 2019 Leak?
In an accidental leak, an E3 2019 Coliseum listing has disclosed some previously unknown information about Marvel’s Avengers Game. This listing revealed that the game will combine both singleplayer and multiplayer modes with cinematic storytelling to provide ‘the defining Avengers gaming experience’.
The information has since been taken down. But assuming the information is true, we now know a few previously unknown details. There will be singleplayer and co-op modes with up to four players, some form of upgrade system to “master extraordinary abilities”, the ability to “customize your heroes to fit your playstyle, and combine powers to defend an ever-expanding world under constant threat”. Also according to this leak, the reveal will be moderated by online/tv personality, Andrea Rene.
What Else To Expect From Marvel’s Avengers Game
In 2018 Marvel Revealed that Shaun Escayg, one of the creators involved in Uncharted and the Last of Us games (most notably serving as writer and creative director for Uncharted the lost legacy and an animator for Uncharted 4) to be the game’s creative director. This is good news to fans considering how well built those games are in terms of both aesthetics and gameplay itself.
As mentioned before the Marvel’s Avengers Game will have an original story and will not be set in the MCU. From the information provided and some digging done by pcgamer.com. It seems that this game could be an open world game with an online presence similar to that of GTA. The 2017 announcement stated:
“The Avengers project is being designed for gamers worldwide and will be packed with all the characters, environments, and iconic moments that have thrilled long-time fans of the franchise. Featuring a completely original story, it will introduce a universe gamers can play in for years to come.”
There are two key phrases to take away here. “A universe gamers can play in for years to come” and “master extraordinary abilities”. Suggesting that this will be a living game (updated overtime) with RPG elements.
PCGamer.com has pointed out that on the Crystal Dynamics careers page there is a listing for a camera designer role. Saying that the right candidate will create “A smooth and seamless player experience through a rich and epic narrative experience”. He said a successful Camera Designer will be able to collaborate with Artists and Designers to create tools and camera solutions to create a dynamic and living world”. The key phrase here being “Living world”. Giving further evidence to support the theory of this being an open world game.
What To Expect From E3
If this leak is anything to go by its clear a lot of key information is set to be revealed at E3. However, it’s unlikely we will get see any gameplay. Although, it’s highly probable that we will see a new trailer. As for the release date at this point, we can only speculate. Some believe we may not see the game hit stores until the next generation of consoles is upon us.
Will we get a release date at E3? We’ll have to wait for June 10 to find out. Until then we can only watch the 2017 announcement trailer and wonder what Square Enix has in store for us at E3.
