All those suffering from Ghost Rider withdrawal symptoms after his appearance in Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D. on ABC will be happy to know that Marvel has announced that Ghost Rider and Hellstrom shows are both in development on HULU.
Gabriel Luna is set to reprise his role as Robbie Reyes aka Ghost Rider. First seen in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. season 4 in 2017, this was the first time the Ghost Rider had been seen on screen since “Ghost Rider: Spirit Of Vengence (2011)” when Nicolas Cage took on the titular role of Johnny Blaze (The original Ghost Rider)
So far no other casting details have been revealed regarding either series, although it is known Marvel TV head Jeph Loeb is going an executive producer for both shows. Ingrid Escajeda (Sneaky Pete, Justified) will serve as showrunner for Ghost Rider, Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.‘s Paul Zbyszewski is also producing for Ghost Rider and will also serve as showrunner and producer for Helstrom.
Ghost Rider will reportedly follow Robbie Reyes and his power struggle with the supernatural demon that he is bound with, as he also uses the spirit of vengeance to serve penance to all those he deems worthy of hell. Despite Luna’s reprisal of the role Marvel has made it abundantly clear that this will be a new iteration of the character and will not be related to the character that was seen in season 4 of Agents Of S.H.I.E.L.D.
Escajeda, executive producer and showrunner for “Ghost Rider,” said in a statement. “This story hits every note for me — my love for grounded yet conflicted characters and my desire to scare the s–t out of people,” “It’s important to me to find a take that thrills existing fans as well as wider audiences and I believe we’ve done just that.”
Helstrom (spelt Hellstrom in the comics) on the other hand will follow Daimon and Ana Helstrom, the children of a Satan. As they “track down the terrorizing worst of humanity.” Paul Zbyszewski, executive producer and showrunner of “Helstrom,” said. “I think we’ve found a compelling way to dissect some of our deepest fears through the experiences of our two lead characters.”
These shows both fall into the supernatural category, part of the Marvel universe that has only previously been seen within the MCU in “Doctor Strange (2016)” and Luna’s brief portrayal of Robbie Reyes in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. the character that quickly won over fans leaving them asking for a Ghost Rider TV show.
This will also be good news to many fans since news broke late last year that the relationship between Disney and Netflix had found itself in troubled waters and subsequently sank. Leading to the cancellation of Daredevil, Punisher, Luke Cage, Jessica Jones and Iron Fist. Who knows what went on behind the scenes but what is known is Disney is launching their own streaming service “Disney +” and Disney also owns 60% of Hulu although it was reportedly Netflix that ended the relationship.
“We’re thrilled Hulu will be moving into a new — admittedly chilling — corner of the Marvel Universe with ‘Ghost Rider’ and ‘Helstrom’,” Jeph Loeb, executive producer and head of Marvel Television, said in a statement Wednesday. “Paul and Ingrid are crafting gripping adventures into fear that live in our ‘Spirits of Vengence’ cornerstone,” he said of showrunners Paul Zbyszewski and Ingrid Escajeda.
Both series’ are expected to debut sometime in 2020. Which show are you most excited about? Let us know in the comment section below…
