Last month it was announced that Warner Bros. and director James Gunn had recruited Idris Elba to replace Will Smith as Deadshot in The Suicide Squad. This was a decision made due to scheduling conflicts (not creative differences or personal conflicts)
However, plans have since changed. And according to Variety, it is now being announced that Deadshot will be completely left out of the film. Elba will now play a new character not previously introduced. It is currently unknown who this will be. But there has been speculation that this character may be the Bronze Tiger.
According to Variety, Gunn said that they made this decision because they “did not want to feel as if they were disrespecting Smith.” This also leaves the door open for Smith to reprise the role at some point. Something that a lot of fans will definitely find comfort in.
The Suicide Squad will reportedly introduce an array of new characters not yet seen on the big screen including; Ratcatcher, King Shark, Polka-Dot Man, and Peacemaker who will all reportedly be new members of the team.
Presumably, Margot Robbie will also be reprising her role as the popular Harley Quinn. Her performance in the first Suicide Squad movie being regarded by many as the highlight of the film.
The first movie whilst gaining mixed reviews did more than adequately in the box office certainly warranting a sequel.
However, being so far from the release we can only speculate the details until we are closer to the release date.
The Suicide Squad hits theaters on August 6, 2021.
