After many requests from users, Sony has finally confirmed a PSN ID change feature will be arriving very soon for PS4 users.
As of April 10 players in North America can already do this. Players in Europe, however, gain access to this feature from tomorrow, Aprill 11.
Sony’s social media director, Sid Shuman, Stated on the PlayStation Blog
“We’re excited to announce that the online ID change feature on PSN is officially launching to PlayStation 4 owners later today.” And he went on to say “You’ll also be able to change your online ID via a web browser. And that feature will also be available starting today.”
Shuman also said that the ID changes can only be done through a web browser or on a PS4 console. This means that sadly PS3 and PS Vita users will not be able to use this feature.
It has previously been revealed that the first change will be free. But any following changes made to your PSN ID will cost $10 / £8, or $5 / £4 for PS Plus subscribers.
It is also known that there are no limits on how many times you can change your ID. Another interesting addition is that you can revert back to any previous version of your ID for free by contacting PlayStation support. Meaning nobody else can take your old IDs, even after you change to a new one.
In order to help your friends notice you after your name change, you can display your old ID next to your new one on your profile for up to 30 days.
Not all PS4 games will support ID changes. Any title published on or after April 1, 2018, should display your new ID in-game. But there are some instances where this is not the case. A full list of games that support PSN ID changes can be found on the PlayStation website. Hundreds of titles will fully support name changes. But a handful of games have “known issues which we [Sony] did not consider critical to the gameplay experience.”
In all, it seems like Sony have covered all the bases. And its clear they have put a lot more thought into this than many of us thought was possible.
