Shortly after the CW’s Batwoman completed its first season on the network, it was announced that Ruby Rose would be hanging up the cowl for good and parting ways with the series.
“I have made the very difficult decision to not return to Batwoman next season. This was not a decision I made lightly as I have the utmost respect for the cast, crew and everyone involved with the show in both Vancouver and in Los Angeles. I am beyond appreciative to Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter and Caroline Dries for not only giving me this incredible opportunity, but for welcoming me into the DC universe they have so beautifully created. Thank you Peter Roth and Mark Pedowitz and the teams at Warner Bros. and The CW who put so much into the show and always believed in me. Thank you to everyone who made season one a success – I am truly grateful.”Ruby Rose on leaving Batwoman
This came as a shock to fans of Rose’s take on the character and the Arrowverse as a whole and it was said at the time that Ruby would be replaced by another actress with a LGBTQ background.
Following the initial announcement of Rose’s exit it was later announced that a new character would be taking up the mantle rather than recasting. The character of Kate Kane is going to be written out of the show and be replaced as Gotham’s caped vigilante.
The new character even has a name “Ryan Wilder”. Ryan isn’t a character from the comics but could just be a placeholder or code name for a pre-existing character. What we do know is that she is younger than Kate – in her mid-late 20s. There aren’t many details beyond that other than season 2 introducing us to the character and how she takes on the cowl.
However, showrunner Caroline Dries said, “I’m inventing a whole new character who in her past was inspired by Batwoman, so she will take on the mantle and is completely maybe not the right person at the time to be doing it, so that’s what makes it fun.”
Several actresses including Stephanie Beatriz (Brooklyn 99), Vanessa Morgan (Riverdale) and Sonya Deville (WWE) have started being rumoured and commenting on the role and being interested in taking over as the titular character of the series.
There is currently no word on any official casting for the role but it will be exciting to see who the CW decides to play the role. Who do you think would be a good fit for Ruby Rose’s Kate Kane replacement? Did you enjoy the first season of the show? Let us know your thoughts below.
