Confession Time: One of my favourite movies as a kid was Disney’s Hercules. As a Disney Classic, the music was larger-than-life, the humour was spot-on, the characters were warm, fun and, easy to root for. But more important than any of that stuff, Hercules involved my all-time favourite nerdy-kid topic: GREEK MYTHOLOGY.
This week I got the chance to ‘Greek out’ again as news of Disney’s live-action remake began making waves.
With rumours flying faster than Perseus after visiting Hermes, the question for this tale-as-old-as-time still remains the same: How much of what we know is fact? How much is fable?
Fact or Fable #1: The Russo Brothers are attached.
According to Variety, filmmakers, Joe and Anthony Russo are producing the remake through their recently opened production company AGBO. The Russo Brothers (in case you’ve been off-planet for the last decade) are best known for directing such box-office smashes as Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Captain America: Civil War, Avengers: Infinity War and the single highest-grossing film of all time, Avengers: Endgame.
As some have pointed out, yes, the Russo’s are producing as opposed to directing the film. But don’t let that keep you from becoming a true believer. With their production company’s latest success, Chris Hemsworth’s action film “Extraction,” lighting up Netflix and thrilling fans the world over, excitement may be well-founded either way.
Fact or Fable #2: There’s a Comic Book Movie writer creating the script.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Dave Callaham has signed on to pen Hercules. Does Callaham have the rhapsodic qualities needed to capture this eternal tale? I’d say so. Prior projects include Zombieland: Double Tap, Godzilla, Spider-man: Into the Spider-Verse, Wonder Woman 1984, and even an epic team-up in 2010 with Sylvester Stalone to write the action-packed Expendables franchise.
Though many things about this remake may still be up in the air, one thing is certain: with a writer like Callaham in place, you can expect plenty of action in this live-action story.
Fact or Fable #3- Arianna Grande is cast to play Megara.
FABLE (thus far…)
Rumours surrounding this casting have flourished ever since the famous pop-singer performed Meg’s definitive song “I Won’t Say I’m In Love” during The Disney Family Singalong. Fans have since flocked to say she nailed the piece (including the song’s five-part harmony) and a petition supporting her for the roll has begun circulating.
Fact or Fable #4- Danny Devito is returning as Philoctetes
FABLE! (thus far…)
Of all the mythic conjectures floating around, this may be the one I’m most excited for. And I’m not alone! It seemed the second the Russo Brothers were confirmed, the internet exploded with fans clamoring for Devito’s return… including Frozen’s voice of Olaf, Josh Gad.
It’s not hard to see why. Devito’s performance as the grumpy, lovable satyr who leaves retirement to train one last hero was one of Hercules’s most beloved and memorable characters.
Will Devito reprise his Legendary role? As with all things Greek Mythological, only time will tell…
