For those who don’t know Spider-Man: Far From Home ended on a massive cliff-hanger after a cameo from a very familiar Spider-Man character. A cliff-hanger that was in danger of never being addressed when Marvel and Sony struggled to renegotiate their deal after it had ran its previously agreed course. Thankfully, they found a way to meet in the middle and renegotiate their terms (although, it’s currently unknown what those exact terms were)
Not much is known about the plot, but the working title is “Serenity Now” and Tom Holland has teased the return of MJ played by Zendaya and promised us an ‘Absolutely insane’ story. If a recent rumour holds any weight part of this absolutely insane story may include a fan favourite (my personal all-time favourite) hero in the form of Matt Murdock a.k.a. Daredevil.
Long-time Marvel associate (and former writer for multiple Marvel comics including Daredevil), Kevin Smith said in the latest episode of the Fatman Beyond podcast, that he has heard whispers of Charlie Cox reprising his role as Matt Murdock (the role he played as the titular character in Netflix’s Daredevil TV series) in the currently untitled Spider-Man 3 movie. He said:
“I heard another piece of good f**kn’ news. Did You hear that Spider-Man, the new Spider-Man movie, gonna have a lawyer in it?”
Then when co-host, Marc Bernardin, asked if he was talking about She-Hulk, Smith responded:
“Charlie Cox, they’re bringing in as Matt Murdock. That’s been the rumor online and they say that’s like the one that like Marvel’s like god damn it how did that get out?“
It seems that this rumour first came from the same inside source that told we got this covered that Han would return to the Fast & Furious franchise and that a She-Hulk show was in development for Disney Plus. So fingers crossed they’re right a third time.
How Does Daredevil Come in To This?
At the end of Spider-Man: Far From Home, Peter Parker is outed as Spider-Man by J. Jonah Jameson. This comes right after Mysterio frames Spider-Man for murdering him (Mysterio). This is where Matt Murdock comes in, in his civilian life Matt Murdock is an esteemed defence lawyer using his super sense enabled lie detector to his advantage to defend the innocent. It would make perfect sense that they use this as an opportunity to officially introduce one of their most popular characters the MCU.
Whether or not Cox would be playing the same Matt Murdock we saw in Netflix’s Daredevil or the character will be completely different remains a mystery. But Tom Holland has teased that we would be seeing the franchise get bigger and better, and there aren’t many things that are “bigger and better” than Spider-Man and Daredevil in their first-ever team-up on the big screen.
Daredevil and Spider-Man have had their fair share of epic team-ups in comics and consider each other ‘best friends’. Seeing this relationship on the big screen would truly be somewhat of a dream come true for any Marvel fan. This would also be the first time Daredevil returns to the big screen since 2003’s Daredevil movie starring Ben Affleck.
If the Daredevil Netflix series has proved anything it’s that we need to give the Devil his due. There are many layers to this character, and it translates well on screen. Of course, this works a hell of a lot better in an R-Rated setting, but Disney’s Marvel has yet to make an R-Rated movie so who knows what they have in store, but the cancellation of the Daredevil Netflix Series has more than proved that there’s a demand for gritty R-Rated superhero stories. So hopefully, Marvel will take heed and give the fans what they want.
